You found algae correlative with detritius. From this you deduce NH4 as the
algae producer? What's the missing step?

Subject: [APD] Floating plant leaves and algae etc

If you consider leeching from decaying plant materials, such as
..............floating leaves from the week, these decay fairly rapidly.
As they do so, they have reduced bound organic N, this decays into NH4,
which if there is enough, can help algae spores "germinate" to grow.

If something causes the plants to lose their leaves etc, or rot on the
plant, this will also provide a much better chance for algae.
Some plants are stunted and are no longer really growing. These plants are
slowly leaking nutrients out, providing good nutrient conditions for algae
growing on them.

To test this, I recently placed some trimmings and leaves in one tank and
netted the rest out of another tank. I had lots of algae in one tank and
none in the other.
Both tanks were running fine before. We tried this in a couple of small
ponds, same thing.

Not quite like adding NH4 from an inorganic form, I did get much more
staghorn algae vs adding NH4.

I also had more staghorn in past heavy bioloading test than GW.

So green water seems to like NH4 a lot, but the staghorn appears when the
organic forms of N/NH4 are available.

I add more and more ghost shrimp till I got algae(about 200-300 in a 25
gal), this is why we cannot supply all the N from fish waste without algae
and need things like KNO3.

I figured the source of organic N should not matter, fish, shrimp, dead
plant parts, excess food etc.

  And........it appear to be true.

But the other issue that has me wondering, is very low O2 levels as a
potential inducer of algae spores. High CO2/low O2 conditions. I've done
ambient O2, but not low O2. Adding lots of dead plant matter can cause the
O2 to go lower rapidly. I did not test this parameter, but will in the
future test.

Coming to a store near you! My new trout fishing system. It
incorporates neodymium magnets hidden inside wingless fruit flies.
And, a "lure" consisting of another neodymium magnet with feathers on
it. (This product will not be available in states or jurisdictions
where use of magnets for sporting purposes has been restricted.)

And it makes them inelegible to ship via aircraft!

Including placing magnets on pigeons' heads. It makes them unable to
navigate.

It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine coaxing a fish to eat a
small neodymium magnet. Those things are powerful.

Yeah, but most car salesmen don't claim that their company invented the
internal combustion engine.

yeah I think Mike might be right on this one. What we don't know is what
the trainer is saying while he conducts the fish. My guess is that there
are verbal commands also for the person hidden under the table.

Sigh - it was fun while it lasted.

Isn't reasonably obvious that this is a computer generated animation
(simulation)?

nah.. recreating such realistic low quality video ... the very
detailed animation of the fish (their fins move very independently of
each other) etc etc is a very very involved and time consuming project.
And even then its very unlikely and extremely difficult to pull off the
realism. There's so many things that show up in animation that give it
away if you look closely. Using magnets would be tons simpler and easier.

No. I thought about that but I think that would be more work than magnets.
