The impellers really weren't the issue.  It seems that the motor itself 
would overheat, either from the impeller not spinning because of calcium 
deposits, or, just for no apparent reason at all.  The excessive heat 
would cause the potting material used around the coils to melt and seep 
into the water, basically creating an oil slick which could, and usually 
did kill the entire tank.  This was only a problem with the 1700's, 2100's 
and 2500's.
