I am not exactly sure how sand can be "organic" but I have used something
similar before.  The tests are A) no shell and B) put some in a glass jar
and shake like mad and measure water chemistry compared to a jar of water
without sand.  This will tell you if the KH or GH is buffered.  Why don't
you want to buy from the place you saw it?  Is the markup unfair or the # of
bags too low?

I may have finally found a source of good substrate in Southern 
California. I was in the hardware store the other day when I saw a small 
bag of nice-looking sand. The bag was very small, but I got the 
manufacturer off of the bag and called them this morning. They only 
repackage it, but they are supposed to call me back about their 
supplier. Perhaps someone here knows where this comes from? Take a look 
at this stuff:
