How gory do you want the detail?

Plants, aerobic bacteria, critters, we all use the same thing
for respiration and energy.

Plants do not need much O2 versus say a critter. They have much
less demand, they (generally) do not move around, no muscles
etc.

Your fish drain far more O2 than the plants even in a very
packed tank might.

Respiration takes two main forms in plant and there is an
alternative pathway also.
