Just guessing but another possibility is secondary growth
of blue-green "algae" growing on the original algae (it's
darker green). The BGA eventually starts to kill off the
underlying algae and then, when conditions become non-ideal
for it, it too dies off. I'd aim for good nutirent levels
for plants, which should avoid the BGA and if the
long-brush-liek algae is the stuff I think it is, it will
grow back, especially if given ample nitrogen and phosphate
but only moderate potassium (what comes with the potassium
nitrate and potassium phosphate).
