The DirecTV doesn't need to phone home, neither the regular receiver nor the
TIVO (which, by the way, is the greatest invention in the history of the
world).  If you don't let them phone home you can't get software updates,
and eventually you won't be able to view pay for view movies, but otherwise
it works perfectly.

I have Dish Network, but no PVR. My sister has DirecTV and the box will 
stop working if you do not let it phone home. I presume this is what 
happens with all of them. How does it get program schedules without 
phoning home?
