you have to figure that these suggestions were for wild caught fish in 
the beginning when those species werent being farmed. nowadays the 
farming is so large and conditioning water is expensive easier to 
acclimate and breed repetitiously. my lfs keeps their discus in water 
around 7.8. its just one of those things people still do but cant 
remember why anymore. only now the reason isnt even relevant anymore. i 
would suggest trying to keep wild caught fish in specific parameters though
