There are computer controlled softeners that allow you to set the degree 
of softening you want. In addition to that, you can use potassium 
instead of sodium. Although if you have water that has no Ca or Mg, but 
lots of K, it won't be very good for the plants, but mixing back in some 
"regular" water should fix that.
