I don't know, but I can tell you that I kept several swords in my 75G 
with pure quartz gravel and a layer of laterite. No fertilizer in the 
root zone at any time. They grew from typical fish store size to 24" 
monsters over the course of a few months. Do they grow faster or better 
with root feeding?

I would suspect that since sword are amphibian, they spend a lot of time 
putting out roots in order to anchor themselves and insure a source of 
food for when they aren't under water.
