Re: [APD] looking for cuttings

I have just been informed that I live in a "black hole" for aquatic plants
in my part of Ontario. lol

Thanks for the invite Berne. Do you have any experience with crossing the
border with plants??

would like xmas moss or Taiwan moss

I've been wondering lately if it would be a good idea to stop
using the air pump and two stones on my planted community tank. It has a
overly large (for the tank) Bio-wheel 300 which provides plenty of surface
agitation. I use Flourish Excel and am wondering if the aeration is
driving out the Excel faster.

Excel is a liquid form of carbon, not a gas, and can't be driven off by
surface agitation or aeration. Great product,
I use it, too.

I don't think aeration will drive out the Excel, it is not
a gas dissolved in the water. It can minimize the amount of
CO2 in the water and, if you are adding CO2 wither with a
compresseed gas set-up or via a fermentation bottle, then
an airstone or Biowheel will certainly greatly increase how
fast the CO2 is shed by teh water.

The Biowheel is probably providing plenty of aeration and,
in a well planted aquarium, even the Biowheel should not be
necessary to maintain healthy O2 levels in the water -- the
plants will do much in that regard as will having a
reasonable flow of current in the aquarium from a pump or
filter.

Good luck, good fun,
Scott H.

Jeff,

If you're anywhere near the Detroit area - i might urge you to come
across the boarder and catch one of the local aquarium society
auctions. Most of us have them spring and fall. Greater Detroit
Aquarium Society's fall auction will be in october this year, i dont
have a confirmed date - but it will be posted on their website as soon
as i do. Typical to see around 200 bags of plant cuttings there at
every auction. We have them in royal oak, just off of i-75, so it'd be
easy for you to find if you come across the Ambasador bridge. Check us
out at www.greaterdetroitaquariumsociety.com

Subject: [APD] Planted tank setup for sale
To: <aquatic-plants at actwin_com>

The time has come that I must get rid of my planted tank, as I
am moving out of state and don't want to take it with me.

Here's the specs:

65-gallon X-high glass tank with wood stand and glass top
Eheim Pro canister filter
Eheim heater
Gravel substrate
Large driftwood centerpiece from Aquarium Driftwood
5-pound CO2 tank w/ regulator (empty)
Many extras (air pumps, chemicals, algae scrapers, etc.)

Mature (3-lobe) java fern
Overgrown anubias nana
Some floating hornwort

4 clown loaches
3 SAEs
6 cherry barbs
Some MTS

I'm not going to include my homemade light hood, because
it might be a liability. But you can have the ballasts and bulbs
if you like. The CO2 system was leaking and hasn't
been set up for a few years, but the tank and regulator should
be OK. This system has been zero-maintenence for the last
few years. I clean out the filter and do a water change every
few months, and feed the fish a couple of times per week.

$200 or best offer takes all. I can deliver and help set it
up. I don't want to part it out, so don't ask me if you can
just buy the CO2 tank or whatever. I'd prefer to move it
this weekend.

Please e-mail me off-list if you are interested.

Aeration in a planted tank isn't necessary if the tank is heavily planted.By
this I mean ALOT of plants. If it has a fae then I would recomend still using
the bio-wheel.Make sure the difuser is on the opposit end of yuor tank.

I know your only using Excel at the moment, but I would advise adding a co2
fermintation canister.I use the one from HAGAN. It works great and is
cheap.I'd stay away from diy types, too many bad accidents waiting to
happen(just my opinion). The EXCEL can still be added along with it.

My 30gallon long is currently ran by: Hagen co2 canister,

                                                     Emporer 280,

                                              1-48" shop light using 2
Corlife Nutri-grow @40watts,

                                                       1 Coralife 50/50
@40watts'

                                                    merlin 60+ fluidized bed
filter w/Rio 600 pump,

                                                   and Eco-Complete
substrate.

Before I was using 2 - 18" lights that you can get @ $5.00 with a plant
light @15watts.Not nearly enuogh by any means.I was also using Natural
Aquarium Vital. This stuff was only so-so at best I thought.

Subject: [APD] back after long hiatus... with questions
To: <aquatic-plants at actwin_com>

It's been at least a year since I was a member of the list, and longer since
I posted last. I still have the same tank I set up over 2 years ago now
with help from everyone on the list (thank you Tom Barr especially!). In
that time, my tank has looked very good, and very bad, but it has remained
an awesome learning experience throughout. FWIW, it looks awesome now, since
I've been paying atention to it enough.

So, my questions. I work at a LFS, and I'm setting some folks up with some
nice planted tanks (finally, some customers interested in freshwater planted
tanks!), and I want to make sure I'm doing them right.

First, I'm working with a guy who's converting his 120g reef tank into a
fresh planted tank. He has two 250w 10K double ended HQI metal halides, and
wants to use these for his tank, which seems like overkill, but also looks
badass. He has a large wet/dry, and although I know canisters are better
since you don't loose so much CO2, this is what he's working with... Anyway,
I'm making him one of these:
http://www.gwapa.org/articles/inline_co2_reactor/, because I really like the
one I have running on my tank.
One thing though: Should I make it longer, since he will most likely have
to run more CO2 than it was designed for? Speaking of that, I was thinking
he'd really need to crank the C02 up... how much do you think he'll need per
minute or second?

Secondly, I'm setting up another 120 (popular tank these days, huh?) for a
lady who wants to do it all right from the start. She asked about
undergravel heating cables, and I said I wasn't sure how useful they were...
thoughts? Also, I was going to use the Eheim Pro II 2128 filter, and run
the same inline CO2 reactor I linked above. Opinions and/or thoughts on
these filters? What would you guys recommend for lighting this tank? I was
thinking of 2x250w MH system, but that's only because I saw the aforem
entioned system and was awed.

Thanks forthe help,
Jared

I have found aeration very beneficial to plants and fish in a
heavily planted tank (Non CO2 injected). The aeration improves the gas
equilibrium between water and air. I have noticed large fish gasping
(funneling) early in the morning when the plants have almost depleted the
water of O2 at night. I have lost some large goldfish some years ago due to
this, smaller fish seem to get by with lower O2 levels at night. Now I use
a spray bar and extra aeration to promote water movement. In a heavily
planted tank water movement is restricted by the plants.
