[APD] Re: Aquarium as Seismometer
We built a new convention center here that has a ballroom above the exhibit
halls below with long span steel trusses supporting the load. Turns out the
engineer didn't design in enough rigidity to the ballroom floor and it can
be put into a rythmic motion under the right circumstances, such as the
bounce created by a lot of dancers. The fix? Computer controlled equipment
with big weights mounted to the steel trusses that can be set into counter
motion to dampen the dancer's bounce. Accelerometers are involved, and they
didn't look all that complicated. So maybe a big lead weight sliding on a
rod connected to a computer?
