No, they're not the same.  Oliver Knott was recommending Neritina 
natalensis, which are smaller than Olive nerites (Neritina usnea), .  Here 
is a picture and description of the Olive nerite, which George Booth 
recommended:

Although Oliver Knott wrote me that they are available in Germany, they're 
not supposed to be imported into the U.S.  I tried, unsuccessfully, to get 
an import permit.  The whole matter became moot for me when all my algae, 
spot and otherwise, disappeared.  I believe this was and is due to the 
rather heavy fertilizing regime recommended by Tom Barr (10 ppm nitrate and 
1.5 ppm phosphate four times a week, with Seachem Flourish and Seachem Iron 
on the other three days).
