I believe these are the same critters that Oliver Knott
recommended so highly when he was at the AGA convention in
Washington, D.C. last year.

No, they're not the same. Oliver Knott was recommending Neritina natalensis, which are smaller than Olive nerites (Neritina usnea), . Here is a picture and description of the Olive nerite, which George Booth recommended:

Although Oliver Knott wrote me that they are available in Germany, they're not supposed to be imported into the U.S. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get an import permit. The whole matter became moot for me when all my algae, spot and otherwise, disappeared. I believe this was and is due to the rather heavy fertilizing regime recommended by Tom Barr (10 ppm nitrate and 1.5 ppm phosphate four times a week, with Seachem Flourish and Seachem Iron on the other three days).
