Or even with a dirt tank, it's not terribly critical what
goes over the dirt. Anything in roughly the 2-4 mm size is
nice. Even the epoxy covered stuff can be used if you like
pinks or blues etc.

Washed beach or river sand/fine gravel over cow manure. Not
my style but it's been done. Flourite over nothing but the
glass, works good too. Etc., etc. etc.,,,,
