Just when I got it through my head that algae problems were cause by
nutrient imbalances and that the best way to avoid them was to have healthy
plants, along comes "algae growth inducing chemicals".

Where do these chemicals originate?  Are they produced by the higher plants
as a result of stress of some kind?  Or are they like many disease
organisms, always present and waiting for a trigger to get to a critical
mass?  Could a way of fighting algae be to eliminate those chemicals
directly?
