How do they build up? I'm curious, because what I know of chemistry says that hot water can hold more dissolved metals and minerals and so on than cold...so if cold water comes in and hot goes out, it doesn't seem like there should be buildup. Or, could it be sediment coming in undissolved, and sinking to the bottom, and then being dissolved by the warmer water?
  Metals can build up in your water heater.  You're probably OK if you flush 
  it a couple of times a year.  Otherwise, your fish can suffer depending on 
  the metal content in the water that comes from your water heater.
