There are many different types of "strip" timers
(designed to switch several things off and on) on the
market for reef applications (wave making), any of
these would be fine for your 20 minute intervals and
some of the better ones might even protect to some
degree.Since timers are often quite hard on expensive
pumps, and  because most do not do well long term w/
shutting on and off as they are designed to run
continuously, some timers have "ramp up" features that
slowly turn on the juice. Try checking the archives at
any reef site (reefcentral springs to mind) for info
on brands and where to get them if these would work
for what you have in mind.
