I'd use a check valve, but you don't have to use an
expensive one.

One doesn't have check valve-- the other doesn't provide
for adjustable pressure. Six of one, half dozen of the
other -- diff ways to economize on the manufacturing costs.

I've used solenoids but generally don't use them. They
don't add much value except for the CO2 that they save.
Costwise, the CO2 savings is hard to justify against the
cost of the solenoid, unless you're getting one of those
$28 bargain from Custom or it comes with the regulator like
on the combo units.
