I think you're right on target about not eonugh light
getting to the plants and that kind of algae growing where
light is poor. Not sure if it's competition exactly. 

He has enough light, sort of, it seems, except for that
darn duckweed.  If he gets rid of the stuff blocking the
light, he should have ample. Meanwhile cleanup the
red/brown stuff while the plants are getting back up to
snuff.
