Re: [APD] What does PMDD mean?
Originally a susbstitute for the rather pricey Dupla
fertilizer drops, "PMDD" meant "Poor Man's Dupla Drops."
The original work and the coining of the term was done by
Paul L. Sears & Kevin C. Conlin.
With Dupla having lost most of it's relevence in the
current market (or at least its presence), and most folks
having become aware that women, even poor ones, also garden
aquatically, many interpret "PMDD" as "PreMeasured Dosing
Drops" or "PreMixed Dosing Drops."
I believe the original idea was to make a frequently
appliable fertilizer while limiting or controlling
phosphate. Phosphate, for a long time, was believed by many
to cause of algae in aquaria. We know better now --
imbalances among nutrients tend to promote algae not the
presence of any one of them even at levels once thought of
as high ;-)
You can google it and find a few hydroponic sources selling
the ready-made PMDD (if the notion of readymade DIY doesn't
through you for a loop) or ingredients to prepare your own.
Or you can just dose KNO3, K2SO4, and KH2PO4 in their
powdery form and supplement with a good trace mix like
Tropic Master Grow or SeaChem Flourish. Lots in the archive
about about dosing -- look "Tom Barr" "dosing"
