[APD] Re: To Add Peat or Not To Add Peat to a Substrate?
Hello all.
Some time ago I heard a bunch of you discussing the benefits of using a
cable heater versus not using a cable heater, and someone mentioned, I believe it
was you Tom, that one of the substrates you recommended was using a Flourite
or Onyx substrate and then adding some peat to it. This idea intrigued me,
and so I did some research on The Krib about it. I have read some different
posts in The Krib archives regarding this with some people saying that it is
a good idea to add peat to your substrate when setting up a tank and some
people saying that it is not a good idea to add peat to your substrate when
setting up a tank, with many differing opinions and no clear consensus. Can any
of you tell me whether it is a good idea to add peat to a substrate like
Flourite when you are setting up a tank or whether it is a good idea not to do
it? Wouldn't the added peat in the substrate discolor the water in the tank
after a while? And if you were to add peat to your substrate, how exactly
would you mix it in with the substrate? Would you just put it in with the
Flourite and mix it combining the two together and then just laying out the
substrate, would you layer the peat underneath the Flourite in the bottom half or
third of the tank or set the peat within a layer of a certain number of inches,
would you place the peat on top of the Flourite, etc., etc.? And what if
you were to set up a new tank with a Flourite substrate and an undergravel
cable heater in the substrate also, that being the case, would you still need to
add peat to the substrate anyway, seeing as how you already had an
undergravel cable heater, and how exactly would you mix the peat into the Flourite
with an undergravel cable heater in the substrate? Thanks to all who respond.
Sincerely,
Leroy C.
