Tom Barr responded about tank depth, which I had forgotten.

My tank is 24 inches deep. I am 6 foot, 1 inch tall and I can just barely 
reach the bottom in the back without a ladder (this depends on the height 
of your stand). Reaching the gravel of a 30 inch deep tank sounds onerous, 
not to mention one 36 inches deep!
