I also use black cotton. It's quite hard to tie, but once I get a knot in it
it works well.
Make sure it's 100% cotton cotton. I found the stuff with polyester binding
never rotted off.

p.s. Why stop at one  those wimpy air powered nail guns. Get an explosive
powered one!
