[APD] baking soda and vinegar for DIY co2

A non-fishkeeping friend recently suggested to me using a baking soda bed w/ a vinegar drip to provide co2. He had used this method a number of years ago (I can only guess as to what kind of plants he was growing) with a ton of success. Since the plants (ahem) he was growing were of a type that use a lot of co2 when growing rapidly...I figured it might be worth asking the experts on this forum. I am not that up on chemistry, however this seemed like a possible good idea if it would produce a steadier supply of co2 using a controlled drip, wouldn't draw ants either.
