Sounds like a temperature problem. Most plants grow best at 68 - 78C IME. I
always get Brown spots on Java fern if the temperature rises to 82 and over.
A hood fan should be enough if you live in the tropics/ Southern hemisphere.
Otherwise lower the heater settings.
