Along those line (and just throwing ideas out there),
we know algae like N as much as our plants.  What if
due to a lack of co2,P, or K, not only is plant not
picking up enough nuetriants from the water, but also
release some back out to the water.  As an example of
co2,P or K lacking.  What if the plants leech N as
well.  Plant leaves would make for the best place for
algae to grow.  The leaves setup to get good light, so
good place to get light.  If the plant is leeching,
the leaves are a GREAT place to camp.  Light, food,
nice place to live.  Everything you need live as a
fine algae.
