Regarding the discussion on substrate heating, what I have done is place 
some thick styrofoam under the aquarium. My tank/cabinet is open 
underneath, so I was able to place a 2" thick piece of styrofoam under 
it. Now of course this doesn't heat the substrate, but it sure helps 
prevent heat loss around the roots. My plants seem to do quite well with it.
