I have two java fern that are planted in the substrate only (roots, not
rhizome).  The have rooted around the gravel so much that if I have to move
one, I have to take a clump of gravel with it.

Both my ferns have plantlets on almost every mature leaf.

has anyone noticed that they seem to grow only when
attached to wood, but not to rocks or shells???
