[APD] Re: Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 3, Issue 19

CO2 tanks are all created equal. The only difference is steel or aluminum and capacity. I just refilled my 20# and it cost $20.50 at Messer MG Industries. I have two 20# tanks one steel, one aluminum. The aluminum looks better and is lighter but more expensive to purchase. A friend gave me the aluminum one.

Get the largest one your space and budget will allow. The longer between refills the better, IMO. I use 20# tanks on all my aquariums and keep a 5# as a spare to temporarily connect when I have to swap out a tank.

I have had bulbs that I just popped into a tank with no substrate temp
around 68 and they have grown out no problems.

Leaves reached over a foot usually by the time they are sold.

They also appear to be less fragile with the slightly colder temp than when
they are placed in some of our warmer tanks. This tak is a non co2 fert
with excel potassium and flourish regularly

DO YOU WANT A free co2 regulator or diffuser?

Swing on by our webbforum to see how to get one!!

Hello,

I am looking for someone to supply me with Ceratophyllum submersum. I had this plant 20 years ago, and I would like to have it again.

Thank you, Lonny Langione lonlangione at msn_comFrom steve_wilsonii at fishpalace_org Sun Nov 16 17:02:29 2003

I would have to agree with Giancarlo Podio. The 5# tank just fits under the cabinet and is what I use for my 75 gallon tank. I refill the tank at approximately 10 month intervals for $11. This may not be the most economic, but for less then a dollar per month it is worth not having a CO2 tank in plain view in my living room.

Bob, your probably right, the plant was not labeled, just told to me loosely so I probably spelled it incorrectly, Now that I think back it was gilletii. I talked with Julius Boos, someone with whom I am sure your familiar with and he gave me the same directions, sand-peat mix with lava rock at bottom and water only up to level of where the lava ends or just below. I am doing that with others, Lasia, Urospatha, Cyrtosperma merkusii, but wasnt sure about the Anubius because I know many grow these totally submerged. I tried the old standby and sprayed with some Daconil lightly and it seems to be perking up and feeling better, the third leaf doesnt seem to be getting any yellowing and it has lifted the second one. I am going to get some more lava rock though and repot it just as a precaution. All my other Anubius seem to be thriving half submerged but I may just repot them as well. Thanks for the help! Michael

To: aquatic-plants at actwin_com

Hello peoples!

Got a question about my 4 month old Eheim 2213...
After running silently for a while, it has developed a rattly hum when running. I cleaned the canister out, squeezed the filter pads, rinsed the substrate, made sure the tubes were clear, and disassembles the outer pump components and cleaned them. But it still rattles! And it seems that the flow rate has decreased. The only addition to the filter media was to add a thin extra layer of floss right before the white pad. Any ideas what's going wrong?
Along the same lines...
- When (if ever) should I replace the coarse and fine substrate??
- Do I have to replace the white pad every few months, or can I just give it a good rinse? Could I use some generic floss instead?

Thanks for any advice,

- Seweryn

To: <aquatic-plants at actwin_com>

Hi everyone - I've had an aquarium for 5 years but only recently tried
to introduce plants. I bought a Dupla substrate heater and have a
question - I rebuilt my 15 gallon tank and placed the heating coil in an
1 1/2" of sand substrate with another 1 1/2'' or pea gravel above that.
I expected the wires coming out of the transformer (and going into the
tank) to be warm to the touch but they aren't. The transformer gets very
warm but the wires seem to be at room temperature. Is this normal? I
have another heater in the tank and the temperature of the tank has
remained the same. The substrate heater is a very simple piece of
equipment it's hard to see how anything could be wrong if it's hooked up
correctly. I've checked the connections repeated and everything is fine.
Still, the wires don't seem to be warm at all. Your thoughts would be
greatly appreciated. - TJ

The answer is simple my friends. Count the number of power strips you
have chained together to supply electricity to the tank. One power strip
with one or two empty sockets (or simply using a two plug wall outlet)
means you are low tech. We tend towards usign all of two separate wall
outlets and two power strips per tank. :-)

That is perfectly normal. The heating coils themselves are made from special wire that gets hot when electricity flows through it. The wires going from the coils to the transformer are regular wire that should not heat up with normal loading. Just like a lamp cord should not get warm when the lamp is on.
