CF bulb life

Are compact florescent bulbs good for the entire time they provide visible
light or do they become ineffective over time? Many moons ago I kept reef
tanks with lots of atinic and metal halide bulbs and they supposably only
provided the desired wave length for a finite time due to color shift
etc. My cf bulbs are now approaching 18 months and plants still grow well,
just curious.
