Sending 'who aquatic-plants' to Majordomo at actwin_com reveals the APD
now has 1644 subscribers. How does this compare with history, and how many
of those are still active?

Hard to say. I think there have always been lots of lurkers, and back in
the usenet days it was pretty much impossible to know how many people were
regular readers of the newsgroup. I think the number of active participants
has remained relatively the same over the years, with some people fading
away and new people filling their places.
I think there seem to be more newbie questions in the past several years
which is probably a good sign that more people are coming into the hobby.
The average number of posts per year to the APD seems to be growing too
from a quick glance at the web archives.
