Get a small jar or cup, put your KNO3 or K2SO4 or other crystals in 
the bottom, and then cover with sand or gravel.  Place in tank.  The 
deeper the layer of sand or gravel, the slower will be the rate of 
diffusion into the water.  Diffusion will be much faster through 
gravel than through the same thickness of sand.  You will have to 
experiment to find what works best for you.  Precautions should be 
made if you have fish that might dig up the crystals.
