Grapewood

Does anyone know how safe it is to use a grapewood log in a tank?  I have had 
one in my 55 with lots of java fern attached and thriving, and it's been in 
there from the start (7 months), but I'm worried that it will begin to 
decompose and have an adverse effect on the water (with respect to the fish 
and possibly the plants).  Any comments?
