thanks for the advice Tom & company, I'll try PO4
(Scott H had also suggested it in a private email).
Merrill Cohen suggested that young ancistrus are good
for spot algae removal, so I'll give them a try,
reluctantly. I've been mad at that genus ever since a
bristlenose named Lurch demolished a beautiful and
expensive Marble Queen in 2 days. (I was too
fascinated by his behavior to stop that little disaster ....)

If PO4, ancistrus, and a balanced nutrient load does not
work, I'll remove the root cause of spot algae: water.
That should fix the problem once and for all.
