I once had a power outage when the house temp went down to about 45 degrees, and I kept the tank temp above 55 only by adding boiling water to the tank (very carefully!) because fortunately we had gas for the stove.....and all fish survived the 48hrs alive. I don't recall whether or not I had live plants at the time--likely they were all plastic then. I was very lucky. Diane Brown
