Certainly true.  We made a carbon arc lamp in 8th grade
science class using the cores of some old batteries. 
Anintersting "experiment" but not very practical for
building lighting.

If you emulate the Carboplus electronics, you can cobble
together a DIY version of one of those.  Interesting for
the experiment, but . . .

Or you could just buy $5 or $10 worth of CO2?
