Andrea suspects some quarry gravel is causing her water's alkalinity to climb.

Andrea, try putting a handful of the quarry bits in a cup and pour a splash 
of vinegar (acetic acid) or lemon juice (citric acid) over them.  If the 
quarry stuff is the cause of your problem, you should see some fizzing.  If 
not, something else is causing the problem.  Try the acid test on anything 
you suspect.
