What material should I use to build a light rack?

       I need to build a light rack to sit on top of a 100 gallon acrylic 
tank.  4  55w  AHS light kits will be mounted to it's underside.  It will all 
be hidden under a canopy.  
       The building material only needs to be 1 or 2 inches wide.  
       What material should I use?  Acrylic?  Oak?  MDF?  If wood, is 
unpainted OK?  
       Thanks.  I need to get it done this weekend.
