Dave, who has been kind enough to try to help ID the Daphne Algae and
my stuff said that they had very few branching points:

Hmmmm.  It sounds otherwise some much like a cladaphora of some kind. 
The branching can vary depending on the species and the water
conditions.  I would have suspected long spaces between joints only if
eh algae was under tremendous current (waterfalls).  But that's only
the guess of the unschooled.
