They do make a colormetric meter which can read off NO3 levels from a liquid
sample that you add reagents to and place the vial into the reader for about
150$ and then the probe cost(100$ or so). I think a place called
customaquatic.com sold it. Bug them and see if they still carry the product
and if not ask what manufacturer made the product.

This would help those that are colorblind. Or you can ask the wife/kids or
friends.
