For those who are not familiar with diatomaceous earth filtration:
In addition to what Tom has been writing, diatomaceous earth filtration is
really meant for a quick clean-up of an aquarium, etc. very efficiently.  It
"polishes" the water.  Tests have shown that the System 1 Diatomaceous Earth
Filter filters down to 1 micron.  You don't want this as a full-time filter.
 It is an excellent accessory for helping to clean up an average aquarium
efficiently -- within an hour or less! Large aquariums, naturally, take a
little longer; or with more changes of the diatomaceous earth.
It has no place in biological filtration, nor do fine micron cartridges.
