no one seems interested in this poor guy's question so i'll field it.

the drastic actions your taking to bring the algae under control
are probably just going to make things worse in the long run.
you need to buy those test kits right away.  nitrate, phosphate, and iron.
hagen makes a decent cheapo kit i believe. chances are you have nitrates in 
your tap
water but no phosphates, or vice versa, or your traces are low. you need to
establish the right water parameters and get some water sprite to get things 
moving along properly.
