Those mystery snails do wreak hhavok on the plants. If you can find 
some, Malaysian Trumpet snails (MTS) or Red Ramshorns seem to be the 
best. I've even got loads of plain old Ramshorns in my tanks and 
haven't detected any damage. Ramshorns reproduce like crazy though. 
As long as there is an adequate food supply, the snails I mentioned 
don't seem to bother plants at all. My favorite is the MTS.
