The reportedly typical problem for these is that, if the water tends to
"channel" up through the sand at all, the channelling will become more
and more pronounced.  The sand that isn't in the channel will get
clumpier because it isn't "fluidized."  And then the surface area
drastically drops.  You might have seen this in a sand filter that has
been left unattended for a while.

This problem is similar to wheels loading up or stopping their
rotation, or both.
