Encouraging Anubias to branch

I recall reading somewhere -- I think it may have been in one of Karen R.'s
excellent articles in AFM -- that an Anubias rhizome will branch if one
makes a "nick" in the side of the rhizome. I want to apply this technique
to an Anubias barteri nana. Does anyone have any advice or warnings for
me? I am especially curious to know how best to make the incision --
fingernail or knife? -- and also how deep and long the cut should be. I
have prowled through the archives but only found reference to dividing the
rhizome. Thanks.
