Oxygen aeration-is it needed?

My tank hasn't been growing as vigorous at it was. I realized last night
that maybe it's because I'm not aerating the water. I haven't been running
my air pump because I figured the plants were providing enough oxygen for
the fish. But, please tell, do the plants need oxygen too? I thought I had
read that you should run the CO2 during the day for photosynthesis and run
the bubbler at night for oxygen production. Am I not providing enough oxygen
for the plants, so that they are depleted come morning and won't give off a
lot of oxygen because they weren't able to store it up over night? Can
someone enlighten me on this?
