All this talk of barley straw and hydrogen peroxide convinced me to try
hydrogen peroxide in one of my tanks. I added 20ml of 6% H202 to my 70
litre tank, giving me a little under 20ppm concentration.
There was an effect on the algae, in that my BBA went grey rather than dark
green. However, after two days, I've just had to rescue my two bristlenose
cats from the tank, as they were looking very unwell, with clamped fins and
splotchy colouring, and barely moving at all.
The algea is still there though.
