Re: Carbon in Filter Cartiridges
A number of folks have noted that, for planted tanks, its best to slit
the Penguin/Marineland filter cartridge and dump out the charcoal --
the charcoal is not needed and might filter out some useful organic
materials.
Well said; easily done.
I was thinking this: some of these cartridges have so little charcoal
-- it doesn't even make a contiguous layer one particle deep -- that
it's effectiveness is probably negligible to start with and whatever
effectiveness it has is probably exhausted in a very short time.
Has anyone done any measurements on charcoal (activated carbon, not
anthracite) effectiveness and how long it lasts?
