The phrasing of the questions suggests that there is one better than
all the rest.  Yet very good aquatic gardeners have been successful
with a variety of substrates, including yard dirt or laterite under
plain gravel.

For store bought, high cost, substrate, you can't beat Flourite, (the
brand name that you will probably hear most often on planted tank
sights) or at a lesser price, Caribsea's so-called "laterite" or
Floramax or Turface (used on your local baseball park infield).
