Your whitish plants were probably grown emersed. The submersed leaves are
green. Also, if you let the plant grow out of the tank then it may drop all
of it's submersed leaves, leaving bare stems. Parrot Feather (probably
Myriophyllum aquaticum) is a better pond plant than aquarium plant.
