cutting down Vallisneria gigantea

does regularly trimming giant vals harm the plants irreparably? i've been
doing it since the long leaves tend to take over the surface of the tanks
but i've noticed that they have not been growing back as fast as before.
i've lost some Nymphaeas in the past when i was told to trim the leaves so
that they would grow submersed leaves. can this also happen to the giant
val? i usually only cut the floating part and leave the reminder on (this is
a 55-gallon tank so i'm leaving them with 8-11" leaves).
